Grassfires in Dagupan City surge 370%
DATA released by the Dagupan City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) indicates a significant surge in grassfire incidents, with reports showing 47 cases in 2024 compared to just 10 cases in 2023, a 370% increase.
CDRRMO Chief Ronald De Guzman emphasized during the flag raising ceremony last Monday, January 13, the importance of preparing for a worst-case scenario, noting that the spread of fire could further accelerate this early in the year due to the prevailing northeast monsoon conditions.
He identified several grassfire-prone areas that must be closely monitored, including the barangays of Bonuan Boquig, Bonuan Binloc, Bolosan, and Mangin.
In response to the alarming rise in grassfire incidents, Dagupan City Mayor Belen Fernandez mandated a Simultaneous Grass Cutting Day as a preventive measure.
This initiative seeks to help achieve the city’s target of zero grassfires for the year. (Ahikam Pasion)
