101 fireworks injuries recorded in Pangasinan

A total of 101 individuals sustained fireworks-related injuries during the 2025 New Year’s celebration in Pangasinan, according to the Provincial Health Office’s (PHO) ‘Iwas Paputok’ monitoring update as of 9:00 a.m. on January 2.

Data shows kwitis caused the highest number of injuries with 22 cases recorded, followed by boga with 19 cases, and Five Star, 14 cases.

The other injuries were: Bawang, 7; Whistle Bomb, Baby Rocket, and Crying Cow, 6 each; plapla, 4; Fountain and Triangle, 2 each; Dragon, Piccolo, Saturn Missile, Dark Bomb, One Star, Dynamite, Flash Bomb, and Marshmallow, 1 each; and another five cases from unidentified items, most which are banned by national law.

Of the total, 59 were active participants or those who lit the firecrackers, while 42 were passive.

The injuries varied in severity. For blast burns with no amputation, victims sustained injuries in various parts of the body.

Three individuals suffered blast burns with amputation: a 15-year-old male (third and fourth left fingers), a 12-year-old male (middle finger left), and a 17-year-old male (left hand).

The 101 fireworks-related injuries from December 21, 2024 to January 2, 2025 was 31% lower compared to the same period in 2023-2024.

The age group most affected was 10-14 years old, with the youngest injured being a one-year-old male and the oldest a 70-year-old female, both of whom were passive victims.

Data for the report was sourced from various hospitals and medical institutions in the province, including both government and private hospitals, the Region 1 Medical Center, Rural Health Units, City Health Offices, and the Conrado F. Estrella Regional and Trauma Medical Center.

Meanwhile, several towns reported zero fireworks-related injuries for the 2025 New Year’s celebration, including Agno, Burgos, Dasol, Infanta, Laoac, San Manuel, Sison, Balungao, Rosales, San Nicolas, and San Quintin.

Ironically, Sto. Tomas and Bolinao, both of which impose firecracker bans, recorded one injury each. (Eva Visperas)
