PANGASINAN had 21 firecracker-related injuries during the Christmas week, the highest in Region 1 where a total of 31 cases were recorded, according to the surveillance report from the Department of Health–Center for Health Development Region I for December 21 to 26.

The other cases were in Ilocos Sur with seven; La Union, two; and Ilocos Norte, one.

In Pangasinan, San Carlos City reported three injuries, while Asingan, Bani, Binmaley, and Calasiao had two each.

Other municipalities such as Bautista, Bayambang, Malasiqui, Mangaldan, Pozorrubio, Sual, Umingan, and Dagupan City each had one injury.

The majority of patients were treated at the Pangasinan Provincial Hospital (PPH), which saw six admissions. This was followed by Bayambang District Hospital with three cases, and Asingan Community Hospital and Region I Medical Center each receiving two. Other hospitals in the province also treated individual cases.

The report highlights that the majority of the victims are aged between 10 and 14 years old.

Among the injured, 15 were active participants who handled the firecrackers, while 16 were passive observers.

The leading cause of these firecracker-related injuries was “boga,” a kind of improvised cannon, which accounted for 14 cases.

Of those injured, 28 were sent home after receiving first aid, while three required hospitalization.

As the New Year approaches, authorities repeatedly remind the public about the dangers of firecrackers and the importance of safety precautions. (Ahikam Pasion)
