Japanese dies in road mishap
A 75-year-old Japanese died after he was hit by a truck early morning on December 27 along Barangay Golden in Mapandan town.
Florante Petrola, a 50-year-old truck driver from Barangay Nilombot, Mapandan, was driving his Isuzu truck southward along the road when he accidentally hit Hyakuju Moteki, a Japanese national residing in Barangay Apaya, Mapandan.
According to the initial police investigation, Moteki was seated in the middle of the road, appearing intoxicated at the time of the incident. Petrola was unable to avoid hitting Moteki who was run over by the truck, sustaining injuries to multiple parts of his body.
Moteki was rushed to Mapandan Community Hospital for emergency treatment. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was transferred to Region 1 Medical Center Hospital but he was declared dead on arrival by attending physicians.
Authorities have taken Petrola and his vehicle into custody at the Mapandan Police Station for proper disposition of the case. (Eva Visperas)
