IN a bid to protect the public from the dangers of firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices, Bolinao Mayor Alfonso Celeste has issued an executive order imposing a total ban on the manufacture, sale, distribution, and use in the town.

The directive, signed on December 20, 2024 and posted on the official Facebook page of the local government, is intended to prevent accidents, injuries, and property damage.

Executive Order (EO) 70-2024 is in accordance with Republic Act 7183 or the Firecracker Law, which regulates the use and sale of firecrackers, and Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Memorandum Circular 2017-105, which empowers local chief executives to create regulations on fireworks and pyrotechnic devices in their respective jurisdictions.

“While firecrackers are a long-standing Filipino tradition during holidays, they also cause a significant number of injuries and fatalities every year,” the mayor’s order said.

Firecrackers in violation of EO 70 will be confiscated by the Philippine National Police and Bureau of Fire Protection while Barangay Councils are tasked with monitoring compliance, reporting violations, and coordinating actions with law enforcement. (Eva Visperas/Kim Gealogo)
