Strangers
By Virginia Jasmin Pasalo
WHEN I reflect about what happened in the last five years to my siblings and their families, I am surprised how they could have surmounted so many difficulties seemingly without solutions in sight, then. But they did, so did I. Amazing how the human spirit, with very minimal logistical support, can muster the energies around and tap at so many sources, physical and spiritual to reverse dire situations.
The kindness of strangers, for example. People whose names we didn’t even know, crossed our lives for unknown reasons, and extended the help we needed at the exact same time we were about to lose hope, without asking for anything in return. Some strangers stayed to enrich our lives, others just moved on, without giving their names, leaving us only with a warm smile, glimpsing their souls for a few seconds, with the momentary interlocking of our eyes, as if we knew each other before, in another lifetime.
It could be true, that we’ve met these strangers in another lifetime. Our consciousness has a way of blocking genetic memories. If a soul enters a body the moment after conception, where did the soul come from? What is its story? It is said that the soul, the spiritual essence of a human being or animal, is immortal, and that “death is just one step of a soul’s journey through the universe.” It is highly possible, then, that we know about these strangers from before.
Exactly the same sentiment, over and over, for some people we encounter in our lives, as the circumstances when I wrote the poem, “Do I know you from before?” in 29 June 2015:
Do I know you from before?
why does it feel like
i knew you from before?
why do your words sound
like i heard them before?
do i know you from before?
have i kissed you before?
why do your lips
taste like
i tasted them before?
why do your arms
feel right around me
even if
I have not even|
touched you,
seen you,
not even seen
your shadow
you are here
and not here
but i can feel you
right here
right now,
inside of me.
