Proactive legislation at its best
THE Dagupan citizenry is finally in for the good times ahead, thanks to the proactive new majority at the Sangguniang Panlungsod.
Vice Mayor Bryan Kua, Majority Leader Michael Fernandez, Councilors Dennis Canto, Jigs Seen, Marcelino Fernandez and Bradley Benavidez have been working tirelessly for the past weeks, meeting in regular sessions and conducting committee meetings, not once a week but twice a week. They have shown what politicians dedicated to public service can and should do.
To the five councilors’ credit, 14 ordinances and 10 resolutions ( See story on page__) were passed unanimously, thanks in part to the endless walkouts of the new minority.
There was no doubt that these urgent issues needed quick action. While there may still be some who may question whether these were vetted enough, the purposes of the adopted ordinances and resolutions were not controversial, and therefore, fiscalizing by the new minority was not necessary.
But there’s one thing the five cannot be accused of – plagiarizing proposed draft ordinances.
This unprecedented level of performance is proof of what a supportive city council can do to hasten the development of the city.
But will the old majority with the expected return of suspended Councilors Red Erfe-Mejia, Alfie Fernandez and Irene Lim-Acosta in mid-January 2025 stop the momentum? It can try given the 7epaLiFes’ arrogance and mindset, as evidenced by their weekly ‘barkada’ walkout after registering “present” (who want to be paid their salaries without participating in the deliberations), and that will no longer surprise Dagupeños.
The Belen Fernandez administration finally accomplished what it sought to achieve in the last two years, never mind that it missed earning the Seal of Good Governance last year.
The old obstructionist majority can no longer undo, reverse and discard the benefits being enjoyed by Dagupeños today . It can continue to do its worst, but Mayor Belen and her allies are already way ahead, doing great
