New Calmay Bridge groundbreaking set Dec. 20

GROUNDBREAKING for a new bridge that will cross the wide Calmay River in Dagupan City is set on December 20, according to Pangasinan Fourth District Rep. Christopher de Venecia who worked for the project’s funding.

The bridge will replace the Franklin Bridge that used to connect the island barangay of Calmay to Poblacion Oeste and the Dagupan downtown area, which was washed out by a big flood in 1935 that also sank the San Albertus Magnus College built by the Dominicans.

The new Calmay Bridge will be part of the Dagupan-Mangaldan Circumferential Road that is already under construction, according to the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

It will also form part of the Pangasinan-Zambales By-Pass Diversion Road that will connect Judge Jose de Venecia Blvd. Extension Road in Barangay Tapuac and the downtown area to Barangay Carael in Dagupan, and then to Binmaley.

DPWH Regional Director Ronnel Tan said the Lingayen-Dagupan Road via Binmaley through the Jose de Venecia Expressway is scheduled to be completed soon.

Construction of another bridge, across Calmay River that will link Barangay Pugaro to Bonuan Gueset, then to Mangaldan from Silverio’s Restaurant is also being considered. (Leonardo Micua)
