Calmay Bridge to bring economic boost to island barangays

THE planned Calmay Bridge whose groundbreaking is set on December 20 and construction to immediately commence, will increase commercial activities in two island barangays and contribute more to the overall economic growth of Dagupan City.

Mayor Belen Fernandez said the road access to the mainland, Barangays Carael and Calmay can serve as new frontier for development since the downtown area is already congested.

The mayor also described the bridge as “super ganda” based on the artist’s perspective of the structure that will span across the wide Calmay River that also flows to Binmaley and Lingayen.

The bridge, a project of the Department of Public Works and Highways, will unclog heavy traffic along the Pangasinan-Zambales Road between Dagupan and Binmaley.

Almost 90 years ago, a Franklin Bridge connected the island communities to the mainland but this was destroyed by a big flood in 1935.

Fernandez thanked Fourth District Representative Christopher de Venecia for lobbying for the funding of the project in Congress with the support of Speaker Martin Romualdez and DPWH Regional Director Ronnel Tan. (Leonardo Micua)
