THE Mapandan local government under Mayor Karl Christian Vega was awarded the 2024 Gawad Kalasag Beyond Compliant Award by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), the highest honor recognizing excellence in disaster management.

In 2023, the town already received a Gawad Kalasag Fully Compliant award, which meant disaster preparation and response measures were up to national standards.

The mayor said the Beyond Compliant award, surpassing national standards and setting the benchmark for others to follow, is a testament to the collective efforts of the local government, the Municipal DRRM Office led by Maian Jen Arguelles, and all sectors involved in disaster management for the year 2024.

“This significant upgrade not only reflects Mapandan’s commitment to excellence in disaster preparedness but also showcases the municipality’s proactive approach in strengthening its resilience against natural calamities,” he said.

Mapandan’s recognition was attributed to its comprehensive disaster management programs, effective risk assessment, early warning systems, and community-based preparedness initiatives, which have been continuously improved over the years. (Trisha Mae Visperas/ Intern)
