DICT expands free Wi-Fi access in R1
THE Department of Information and Communication Technology (DICT) in Region 1 significantly expanded its free Wi-Fi program, growing from 148 sites in 2022 to 1,129 in 2023, with 998 active sites as of November, providing internet access across the region, including far-flung areas with limited service.
During the Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas Forum on Tuesday hosted by the Philippine Information Agency, DICT Ilocos Region Director June Vincent Manuel Gaudan highlighted the rapid growth, noting that free Wi-Fi coverage had expanded to 280 public places this year, with special focus on underserved areas known as geographically disadvantaged areas (GIDA) to ensure digital equity.
He also outlined key DICT initiatives, including the National Broadband Program to improve internet speed and affordability, and the GovNet, a secure network for government agencies. Other programs, such as the Government Emergency Communication System, aim to enhance disaster management through ICT.
In addition to connectivity, the DICT is also involved in digital transformation efforts, such as the e-GovPH super app and the National Government Portal aimed at providing easier access to public services.
He also stressed the importance of digital literacy programs like Tech4Ed to upskill citizens for the digital age. (Eva Visperas)
