Manaoag cracks down on poultry farms amid fly infestation
IN response to a series of complaints on social media regarding the increasing number of flies in several neighborhoods, Manaoag Mayor Jeremy Agerico Rosario issued a memorandum on November 11 directing the conduct of a thorough inspection of all poultry farms in the municipality.
Sanitary Inspector Ramon Guico, Business Process Licensing Officer Marlon Vinoya, and representatives from the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO) and the Office of the Mayor carried out the inspections in Barangays Inamotan, Cabanbanan, Baritao, Mermer, Babasit and Lipit Sur.
The primary focus of the visits was to assess sanitation practices, particularly in areas where flies could breed, such as waste disposal sites and feed storage facilities to ensure that the farms are following proper sanitation and waste management protocols.
Meanwhile, a poultry farm in Barangay Babasit was temporarily suspended due to violations cited in a report detailing sanitation problems.
The suspension order, contained in Executive Order (EO) No. 129 issued by the mayor, was served to the farm’s owner with the assistance of local police, the Barangay Council of Babasit led by Barangay Captain Salvador Javilona, the Sanitary Inspection Office, the Business Process Licensing Office, the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office, and the Office of the Mayor.
The order cited several violations at the farm, including an overwhelming presence of flies in the area, noting damaged nets, which may have allowed flies to escape, ineffective pest control measures, and other sanitation concerns.
Under the suspension, the farm is prohibited from hauling, loading, and transporting any of its products until it complies with the required sanitation guidelines.
The owner of the farm has apologized for the inconvenience caused and assured local authorities that they will comply with the Sanitation Code moving forward.
Rosario will call a meeting with all poultry farm owners in the area to ensure that proper measures are immediately implemented to prevent similar problems in the future. (Eva Visperas)
