Agri product prices in R1 soar amid typhoons
THE prices of agricultural products across Region 1 have increased due mainly to the impact of the series of typhoons that hit northern Luzon, as confirmed by Jinnefer Pulamo, a project evaluation officer from the Department of Agriculture (DA).
Despite the region’s capacity to produce over 100% of the local demand for most agricultural products, weather conditions and market forces, including international developments, are ultimately affecting prices.
Ednore Freynon Perez, NEDA-Region1 chief economic development specialist, said rapid inflation in the food index was recorded at 2.4% in October, up from -0.7% the previous month.
However, last month’s spike remains significantly lower than the 9.3% inflation recorded during the same period last year.
Perez noted that rising gasoline prices, influenced by geopolitical tensions abroad, have also contributed to the swift inflation rate in October. (Ahikam Pasion)
