‘Kristine’ initial damage: P863M
SEVERE Tropical Storm Kristine left an initial estimated damage of P863 million in Pangasinan, mainly to infrastructure, according to data released by the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO).
Of the total, approximately P622 million was damage to infrastructure, including peeling asphalt overlays on provincial roads, damaged bridges, provincial buildings, food stalls along the beachfront in Lingayen, and the baywalk in Dagupan City.
Agricultural losses exceeded P 241 million and the hardest-hit sector was rice at P123.55 million, followed by fruits at P 44.6 million, corn at P 5.21 million, and vegetables at P 1.98 million.
The fishing sector experienced losses totaling P64.87 million, while livestock damage was estimated at P1.05 million.
Vida Cacal, the information officer for the Department of Agriculture in the Ilocos Region, said in an interview that the agency had already prepared measures to support affected farmers and fishermen once the validation process is completed.
In addition, the storm affected 134 households in the towns of Burgos, Mapandan, San Fabian, Calasiao, Aguilar, Bani, Lingayen, Basista, and Bolinao, with 22 houses completely destroyed and 112 partially damaged.
The provincial government provided assistance worth P 1.2 million, which includes 3,020 family food packs and 830 hygiene kits for 61,671 affected families. The Department of Social Welfare and Development added family food packs and other relief goods to the province’s assistance efforts.
Dagupan City and the municipality of Bani have both declared a State of Calamity due to the severe impact of Typhoon Kristine. (Ahikam Pasion)
