LATEST GEOHAZARD REPORT

THE Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) reported a decrease in the number of barangays at risk of flooding and landslides in the Ilocos Region based on its latest geohazard report following the impact of tropical storm Kristine in Northern Luzon.

Engr. Vilma Vecino, chief geologist of MGB Ilocos, however, advised local government units to remain vigilant and maintain a full alert status during heavy rains and typhoons, always preparing for a worst-case scenario, and cited 1,704 barangays across the region that are prone to landslides.

The total includes 999 barangays in Pangasinan, 558 in La Union, and 147 in Ilocos Sur.

This number represents a decrease from the 3,166 barangays identified on October 22, which included 1,342 in Pangasinan, 721 in Ilocos Sur, 558 in La Union, and 545 in Ilocos Norte.

The MGB continues to closely monitor critical areas susceptible to landslides and flooding to ensure thorough oversight.

Vecino also emphasized that the MGB regularly disseminates geohazard advisories and other informational materials to keep the public informed. (Ahikam Pasion)
