LINGAYEN-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas issued a warning about a scam that had been using his name to solicit donations for his charitable causes.

In a post on his official Facebook page “Father Soc” on October 16, the archbishop said the scammer was and is most likely still using a Smart sim number 0909 368 4275 and GCASH  0963 030 5713 under the name of a certain “Aljon Alcainde” to solicit funds purportedly for his religious and charity projects.

“This is not me, it’s not me. They are scammers,” he said, adding that the authorities must trace them.

He said he never texts to solicit donations from anyone.

As of the evening of October 16, his post had over a thousand likes, 50 comments, and 233 shares from netizens.

Netizen Michelle Miki Javier Tibi wrote: ”Good morning Father. He (scammer) used your picture. He asked P1,500 from me. He sent me a picture on messenger of a young baby who’s in the hospital. I refused to give him money I promised. I still have his messages from me on messenger and gallery.”

Another netizen, Tony Guillad, wondered how scammers are still able to skirt the SIM card registration law and “the telecommunications provider along with the government authorities should do everything to prevent this kind of heinous activity!” (Leonardo Micua)
