THE filing of Certificates of Candidacy (COC) at the Dagupan City Commission on Elections (COMELEC) office proceeded smoothly and without incident, according to City Election Officer Atty. Michael Franks Sarmiento.

There were 28 aspirants who submitted their COCs for various local positions in the city, and notably, there were no last-minute substitutions among the candidates.

Among the aspirants are four independent candidates vying for councilor positions, including 86-year-old Alfredo Macaalay Dawana from Barangay Tapuac, who previously served as barangay chair in 1963 and is also known as the patriarch of the Fishpond Owners Association in the city.

Sarmiento said there is no legal age limit for candidates and Dawana’s candidacy posed no issues.

The COMELEC officer emphasized that what’s important is for all aspirants to adhere to the commitments they made during filing, and strictly follow campaign rules, including refraining from vote-buying.

“We encourage all COC filers to honor their pledges and respect the trust of the Dagupan residents.” (Ahikam Pasion)
