Kin insists suspect in Salting murder innocent

RELATIVES of the principal suspect in the brutal slaying of Evalend Salting, a student of the Pangasinan State University, assert his innocence, saying Reginald Caracas is a good son and sibling who could not have been responsible for the grisly killing.

Parents and sisters of Reginald asked police investigators to probe deeper as they questioned the severe injuries on Ms. Salting, which they said could not have been inflicted by their son and brother who is of medium-built or a thin man. Probe on death of PSU student continues 

THE Lingayen Police said its investigation of the Salting case is continuing.

P/Lt. Colonel Amor Mio Somine, chief of the Lingayen Police, said they are still collecting the needed evidence, including the murder weapon, in order to pin down the suspect. He also called on other witnesses to provide them with additional information. Based on the post-mortem investigation, Evalend Salting died from a head injury. (Rona Racca)

Brownish water in Binmaley blamed on defective treatment system 

RESIDENTS of Binmaley complained about the brownish water laden with sand coming out from their faucets, which Pamana Water-Binmaley attributed to a malfunctioning treatment system.

Rice techno forum held in Alaminos City 

THE Department of Agriculture (DA) conducted a three-day Rice Techno Forum in Alaminos City, attended by farmers from all over Region 1.

In the forum, DA technicians showcased modern agriculture technology that farmers can adopt to increase harvest. A field tour in model farms was also held while an agri-trade fair was participated in by seed companies, nutrient/plant enhancer companies and the Philippine Center for Post Harvest Development and Mechanizatio. Thieves caught red-handed in Manaoag supermart 

TWO thieves were arrested after being caught in the act of stealing grocery items at a supermarket in Manaoag town. The suspects aged 32 and 34 years old are from Baguio City and Benguet.

They were chanced upon by a security guard while taking items valued at more than P18,000. Both were turned over to the police in Urdaneta City. (Rona Racca)

PSU holds candle vigil for slain student 

A candle light vigil ceremony was held Wednesday night at the Pangasinan State University open field in Lingayen to express mourning, sympathy and condemnation to the brutal slaying of Evalend Salting, a third year B.S. in Business Administration student, whose body was found last September 24 half-buried in the sands along the Baywalk in Lingayen.

Led by the Supreme Student Council of PSU Lingayen, the activity prayed that justice will be swiftly served. The suspect, Reginald Caracas, has been arrested by the Lingayen Police and charged with the crime of rape with homicide. (Rona Racca)

Despite lower generation charge, Decorp still charged higher rate 

THE Dagupan Electric Corporation charged higher billing to its customers last September despite its lower generation charge that month. Consumers noted the 30 centavos per kilowatt increase.

Decorp explained that this was a mere pass-through charge relating to the ancillary charge of the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines. Decorp urged consumers to adopt effective electricity-saving measures to avoid paying higher electric bills. (Mathew Pacheco)

Teenager from San Jacinto reported missing 

FIFTEEN-year girl Jasmin Doculan, a Grade 10 student of the Lobong National High School in San Jacinto, has been reported missing.

Her parents said she has not returned home since going to school at about 6:00 a.m. on September 23. She’s five feet in height and with long hair. She was last seen wearing a white T-shirt and blue pants. (Rona Racca)

Operation Sitio launched in Tocok, Carael

OPERATION Sitio of the Local Government of Dagupan installed sandbags along pathways in Sitio Tocok to enable students to go to school at the Carael Elementary School without wetting their shoes and feet.

Using sand retrieved by dredging machines of the Department of Public Works and Highways from the Calmay River, residents of Sitiio Tocok helped each other in putting the sandbags to protect children from the threat of leptospirosis. Dredging of the silted Calmay River is continuing. (Joana de Vera)
