Manila outlasts Pangasinan, 82-77 in MPBL

THE Pangasinan Heatwaves sustained a gut-wrenching loss in the hands of Manila SV Batang Sampaloc in a nail-biter, 77-82, last October 1 held at Paco Arena.

In the opening frame, Heatwaves’ forward Nat Cosejo made his presence felt when he scored 10 points, but the Batang Sampaloc swiftly answered with 4 three-point conversions alongside James Sena’s 7 points to stamp an early advantage, 21-18.

Jeff Comia led the Pangasinan’s offense in the second period with 6 points through his driving layups to counter. However, Joshua Torralba returned fire with 8 points to stretch Manila’s lead at the halftime, 43-33.

Heading to the third canto, the Heatwaves displayed its deep scoring prowess when it registered 13 bench points against 9 of Batang Sampaloc to snatch the advantage, 62-57.

Midway in the fourth period, Manila managed to climb back through Carl Bryan Cruz’s fastbreak layup to retake the lead, 72-70. After that sequence, a series of back-and-forths unwrapped in the crunch time with one tie and six lead changes.

Trailing at 77-81 with 23 seconds left, Hesed Gabo tried to bail out Pangasinan with a three-pointer but missed the shot to rally the Heatwaves within a striking distance.

Manila relied on the double-digit productions of Jorey Napoles with 12 points and 11 rebounds followed by Jan Jamon’s 12 points and James Sena’s 10 markers.

Meanwhile, Pangasinan garnered 11 points apiece from Jeff Comia and Nat Cosejo in the Heatwaves’ final game of the season.
