REMATCH FOR GOVERNOR

THE highly anticipated rematch between Gov. Ramon “Monmon” Guico III and former Gov. Amado ‘Pogi’ Espino III for Pangasinan’s top post in Pangasinan is set for the May 2025 elections as both have confirmed their candidacies although have yet to file their respective certificates.

“How can I say no to the overwhelming clamor of people for me to make a comeback and provide the kind of service they cherished during our administration? The best part is that now we have a comparison,” Espino III said during a press conference on September 30.

He emphasized his belief in “a better Pangasinan and better service,” noting that the current political landscape allows for a clear comparison of past and present governance.

His father and namesake, Amado Jr., remarked, “We must admit that the province is rapidly deteriorating, and we hear the mounting cries of our people.”

He acknowledged initial hesitation about running for the top position, reflecting on the “mysterious result” of the last election in 2022.

He highlighted various pressing issues, including the poor state of the Capitol grounds, alleged unjust dismissals of medical and other employees, and the recent tragic incident involving a student found buried behind the Capitol complex.

The elder Espino said the condition of the Provincial Capitol mirrors the overall governance of the province: “The provincial Capitol is the face, heart, and soul of Pangasinan.”

Pogi Espino’s running mate for vice governor will be former Dasol Mayor Noel Nacar, who also previously served as president of the Pangasinan Mayors’ League.

The elder Espino will run as the first nominee of Abante Pangasinan Ilokano (API) party-list he founded, which secured one seat in Congress during the last election.

The Pogi Espino-Noel Nacar team will campaign under the local party API, also founded by the elder Espino. They will include former Bani Councilor Ricky Camba (1st District), Nestor “Nikiboy” Reyes (2nd District), former Calasiao Mayor Joseph Arman Bauzon (3rd District), Mangaldan last-termer Councilor Aldrin Soriano (4th District), and former Urdaneta City Councilor Hero Sumera (5th District) as board member candidates.

Their team will not field a candidate for the Sixth District board member position, as there are already four candidates vying for the post.  (Eva Visperas)
