College student found dead in Lingayen Baywalk
THE body of a 20-year-old female college student was found half-buried in the sand along the Lingayen Baywalk on Tuesday, September 24, and her killer has been identified as her boyfriend who has already been nabbed by the police.
In an interview over Aksyon Radyo Pangasinan early last week, P/ Lt. Colonel Amor Mio Somime of the Lingayen PNP identified the victim as Evalend Salting, a resident of Barangay Sabling in Anda town.
She was a third-year Business Administration student at the Pangasinan State University (PSU) – Lingayen Campus.
The victim’s remains were discovered by a family enjoying the beach, just behind the provincial capitol, at around 6:16 pm.
Somine said investigation indicated that Salting went missing Sunday night, September 23.
In an interview on Thursday, Somine confirmed the arrest of the suspect, Reynaldo Caracas, 21, a resident of Anda, Pangasinan, and also a student of PSU-Lingayen Campus.
Caracas was nabbed by the police after a witness pointed at him inside the premises of the Lingayen Police Station.
The witness, who had acquaintances with both the victim and the suspect, was with them the night the crime took place.
Somine said they went to the Lingayen Baywalk, where the couple had a misunderstanding, and the witness left them to respect their privacy.
The baywalk, a tourism spot in the province, has become a risky area, according to netizens, citing a lack of lighting at night and the absence of lifeguards.
Meanwhile, the entire PSU system condemned what it called the senseless killing of a student while giving assurance that it is taking extra measures to enhance the safety of its students.
“This inhumane act of violence is a deep loss to her family and the PSU community, which calls for unified action against crimes and injustice,” read a statement posted on the university’s official Facebook page. (Ahikam Pasion/Eva Visperas)
