Sarah Grace Pascual and Jan Nicole De Vera show their medals

TWO Dagupeña taekwondo jins from the Bangus Taekwondo Club (BTC) took home one gold and one bronze in the SMART/MVPSF National Best-of-the-Best Taekwondo Championships last September 7-8 at the Ayala Malls Manila Bay in Parañaque City, Metro Manila.

Fourteen-year-old Princess Sarah Grace Pascual, a Grade 9 student of St. Albert the Great School in Dagupan City, ruled the Kyorugi Under 168cm Cadet Division to wrest the gold medal.

Meanwhile, sixteen-year-old Jan Nicole De Vera, a Grade 11 student of  the Dagupan City National High School, earned a bronze podium finish in Kyorugi Under 59kg Junior Division.

Despite their short preparation due to class suspensions brought by heavy rains and high tide, BTC head coach CJ Daroya advised the jins to lean on their training and past experiences from previous competitions.

“Even though we had a brief preparation, they remained composed and still gave their all—they’re the best of the best”,  Daroya enthused.

Members of the Bangus Taekwondo Club will continue honing their skills as they gear up for the National Inter-Schools Taekwondo Championships sometime in November.

Some 750 black-belters across the country joined the two-day competition that highlighted two categories of poomsae (forms) and kyorugi (free sparring). (Kim Gealogo)
