Pangasinan edges South Cotabato, 52-50

THE Pangasinan Heatwaves slipped past the South Cotabato Warriors, 52-50, last August 3, at the University of Bangued Gymnasium in Abra.

Heatwaves’ Michael Juico navigated the scoring for Pangasinan with a triple and a reverse layup to submit 5 points alongside Ian Melencio’s floaters to gain an advantage in the opening period, 19-13.

South Cotabatos’s backcourt duo, Mark Cruz and John Paul Calvo joined forces with 8 points to respond but Pangasinan answered right back with a 9-point outburst to retain the lead at the half, 34-27.

Advancing to the third frame, Pangasinan responded on its second unit led by homegrown athlete, Mark Meneses, with  6 points and 6 boards to keep the lead within four, 40-36.

Down the stretch with 15.4 seconds remaining, John Paul Calvo drained a leaning three-pointer to even up the score at 50 all.

Heatwaves in possession, JP Maguilano was blocked by Chris Dumapig on a layup attempt but Maguilano recovered the leather and buried a turn-around jumper to win the game.

Ian Melencio delivered a double-double performance in Pangasinan’s eighth win in 21 starts with 13 points plus 12 rebounds added with the 9-point contribution off the bench from Allen Mina.

Meanwhile, South Cotabato grabbed 16 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists from John Paul Calvo along with the 8-point output of Jammer Jamito.

The Pangasinan Heatwaves will see action on the road against the Nueva Ecija Rice Vanguards on August 10 at the Nueva Ecija Coliseum in Palayan City. (Kim Gealogo)
