Batangas thwarts Pangasinan, 71-64

THE Batangas City Rum Masters outmatched the Pangasinan Heatwaves in their home court, 71-64, last Jul 27 at the Calasiao Sports Complex.

Heatwaves’ Michael Mabulac, feasted early underneath the rim with 5 points and 5 rebounds to spearhead Pangasinan’s scoring. Batangas’ Juneric Baloria responded right away with back-to-back three-point markers alongside Jeckster Apinan and Cedric Ablaza who combined with 10 points to grab the lead, 17-14.

In the second quarter, JP Maguilano provided a spark for Heatwaves‘ second unit with 4 points and 2 rebounds. However, Batangas’ Philip Paniamogan responded with his own 5 points through a triple and a floater to gain control at halftime, 34-26.

The Heatwaves continued to rally in the third frame with mid-range connections, but these were countered by Rum Masters’ three consecutive triples to keep its advantage, 51-43.

Late in the fourth period, Pangasinan stirred a last-ditch rally with a 9-0 run to reduce the gap within five points, 64-59.

Rum Masters‘ Levi Hernandez quelled the Heatwaves’ ’9-point cluster with a pull-up jumper to walk away with their 13th win in the tourney.

Juneric Baloria led Batangas City in scoring column with 16 points, 5 rebounds and 2 blocks reinforced with 13 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 steals from Cedric Ablaza.

Pangasinan chalked up 11 points each from JP Maguilano and Michael Mabulac while Ian Melencio tallied all his 10 markers in the fourth frame.

Pangasinan remained at the 12th seed of the Northern Division standings with 7-13 win-loss card in the 6th MPBL Season. (Kim Gealogo)
