Three agencies support new bangus hatchery project
THREE government agencies are set to sign a memorandum of agreement to tackle environmental challenges in milkfish hatcheries.
The Department of Science and Technology-Metals Industry Research and Development Center (DOST-MIRDC), the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDI), and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources-National Fisheries Development Center (BFAR-NFDC) agreed to collaborate on the project called “HATCH: Heat-Assisted Temperature Control and Monitoring System for Hatchery Management of Milkfish”.
NFRDI Executive Director Lilian Garcia cited the importance and benefit of the project since bangus production in the Philippines is impacted by seasonal variations, especially during colder months when reduced to no egg production is recorded.
The hatchery aims to change status quo to boost bangus production despite lean months.
The HATCH project, funded with P5 million under the DOST-Grants-In-Aid program, will be implemented over 18 months and will run from January 1 to June 30, 2025.
The project will be carried out at the BFAR-NIFTDC in Dagupan City. (Ahikam Pasion)
