THE National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) Region 1 warned against a surge of scam activities after the reported sale of pre-registered SIM cards.

In an interview, Atty. Anna Minelle Maningding of NTC Region 1said that while there are no reports of sale of used sim cards in the region, residents in the region are strongly advised not to buy SIM packs that are not sealed.

Maningding said that buying used SIM cards risk being implicated in exposed scams that used these cards even as he pointed out no NTC personnel is authorized to sell sim cards, new or used.

She said never to trust text messages claiming to be from government agencies, banks, or other offices, because any legit information from these entities is communicated through letters or emails.

“One key indicator of a scam text message is the sense of urgency it creates… messages that threaten, rush, or intimidate recipients are likely scams,” she said. (Ahikam Pasion)
