San Carlos Karate jins shine in int’l karate championship

TWO karate jins from Wado Kokusai Phil -San Carlos City displayed karate excellence when they bagged one gold and two bronze medals in the 3rd Shureido International Karate Cup last July 5-7  at the SM Mall of Asia Music Hall in Pasay City.

Some 1,500 athletes from 13 participating nations saw action during the two-day competition sanctioned by the Association for the Advancement of Karatedo hosted by the Philippines.

Proving her might in form execution, 20-years-old Mikee Abigail Abarquez, who hails from the city’s Barangay Balite Sur clinched a gold medal in 18YO Above Novice Kata and secured a bronze in Intermediate Kata over eight participants.

Meanwhile, 17-years-old Shearu Zia Pascua of Barangay Sapinit showcased her sparring skills and harvested a bronze podium finish in 59 kg Junior Kumite Female.

Trisha Alexie Jimenez, head coach of Wado Kokusai San Carlos, said her jins trained months before the international event.

“Our preparation stood on hard indoor trainings and gym exercises, mostly focused on improving their strength as well as maintaining weight to be in shape and compete against top ranked jins in the world,” Jimenez said, adding that the team will continue to forge their karate skills and mastery to compete in both local and international tournaments. (Kim Gealogo)
