THE National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) Region 1 is urging the public to remain vigilant against text scams by recognizing red flags and taking precautions.

In a press briefing, Atty. Anna Minelle Maninding of NTC Region 1 cautioned citizens about receiving calls from unknown numbers, as these could be the starting point for criminal schemes.

Maninding advised against immediately trusting callers who claim to be agency representatives or company personnel adding that any request for money in exchange for services or favors should raise immediate suspicion or text/calls claiming cash prizes won in contests they did not participate in.

She said scammers often send messages containing links that, when clicked, lead to websites designed to collect personal information from mobile users.

Scammers employ various tactics, including prizes and lottery scams, delivery scams, romance and love scams, job and investment scams, and identity theft.

Maninding encourages individuals who receive text scams to report them to the NTC Region 1.

They can do so by calling or texting the number 1863 or sending a message through the NTC’s official website (ntc.gov.ph). (Ahikam Pasion)
