Breast cancer is highest in Pangasinan
DATA at the Region 1 Medical Center (R1MC) show how breast cancer afflicts the most in Pangasinan than any other type of cancer.
Dr. Lazarus Rafacon, a surgical oncologist at R1MC did not disclose the specific number of cancer patients in Pangasinan, but he emphasized in an interview over Aksyon Radyo Pangasinan on Thursday, July 4, that majority of R1MC cases are breast cancer-related.
While there are various treatment options available, including surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation, some no longer require surgery.
Among the risk factors he identified that contribute to breast cancer development are genetic predisposition, nulliparity (not having children), prolonged exposure to estrogen hormones, and early or late menopause.
Dr. Rafacon, however, dispels myths, clarifying that breast cancer is not caused by trauma or injury to the breast, and neither does breastfeeding increase the risk of breast cancer.
Common symptoms of breast cancer include breast lumps, dimpling of the breast area, nipple discharge or bleeding, breast asymmetry, and swollen lymph nodes in the armpit.
A study also revealed that 90-95% of breast cancer cases occur without a prior family history of the disease.
Medical professionals recommend annual mammograms for women aged 40 and above. While mammograms may cause slight discomfort during the procedure, newer technologies like 3D mammography offer a painless alternative.
Dr. Rafacon emphasizes the value of early screening, even at the zero stage, especially for individuals at risk. Detecting breast cancer early significantly improves survival rates. (Ahikam Pasion)
