FIVE regional Filipino languages: Pangasinan, Bikol, Hiligaynon, Kapampangan and Waray were recently added to Google Translate, the renowned language translation tool.

This expansion represents the most extensive language update to date, breaking down barriers and enabling people worldwide to connect across linguistic boundaries.

The adding of the five Filipino regional strengthens Google Translate’s support for the Philippines and promotion of linguistic diversity.

There is ongoing collaboration with linguists and native speakers that guarantees continuous improvement in translation quality, especially in Pangasinan, as some words and phrases still need polishing and accurate translation.

Google Translate now supports 133 languages, thanks to the innovative PaLM 2 large language model.

Empowering local tourism, tourists exploring beaches, and fish markets in Pangasinan can now confidently interact with local vendors.

Google Translate effortlessly translates phrases from English, Spanish, French, and Catalan into any of the newly added Filipino languages, enhancing the shopping experience.

Beyond the Philippines, Google Translate also supports major world languages like Cantonese (spoken by over 100 million people), the Shahmukhi variety of Punjabi (Pakistan’s most spoken language), and Tok Pisin (the Papua New Guinean creole).

This expansion marks a significant step towards Google’s ambitious 1,000 Languages Initiative, which aims to support the world’s most spoken languages.
