War vs dengue is on 

LOCAL governments in Pangasinan have started implementing their own strategies to protect their respective populations from the impact of dengue during the current rainy season.

Dagupan and Bayambang have started misting operations in different barangays, particularly schools and market places while San Fabian stared to organize its Anti-Dengue Municipal Task Force. Lingayen stepped up its clean up drive in the barangays. Meanwhile, the Provincial  Health Office continues its dengue awareness campaign directed at all towns and cities (Rona Racca)

91% of barangays in Pangasinan are ‘drug-cleared’

THE Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency confirmed that 1,064 out of 1,168 barangays in Pangasinan were already drug-cleared, leaving only 104 affected barangays.

Already listed as drug-cleared are barangays in drug-cleared towns and cities: Agno, Aguilar. Alaminos City, Alcala, Anda, Asingan, Balungao, Basista, Bautista, Bayambang, Bolinao, Binalonan, Bugallon, Burgos, Calasiao, Labrador, Laoac, Lingayen, Mabini, Malasiqui, Mangaldan, Mangatarem. Mapandan, Natividad, Rosales, San Fabian, San Manuel, Sta. Barbara, Sta. Maria, Sison, Tayug, Urbiztondo, Villasis. (Rona Racca)

LPCCs reactivated vs. price manipulators 

THE Department of Industry provincial office reactivated the Local Price Coordinating Council (LPCC) to protect consumers in every locality from price manipulations by traders during the rainy season. Natalia Dalaten, DTI provincial director, said the LPPC is necessary because it is during the rainy season when price manipulation by traders is usually rampant.

Dalaten said the LPCC can recommend the price ceiling of certain commodities in their respective jurisdictions and adopt measures to prevent unwarranted price increases of commodities for the benefit of ordinary consumers. Among the LGUs first to reactivate their LPCCs were Tayug, San Quintin, Umingan and Balungao. (Mathew Pacheco)

Soon, multi-layer parking in Manaoag

THE Manaoag local government announced its plan to build a multi-layer parking area and intermodal terminal to ease traffic in downtown to accommodate increasing numbers of pilgrims and tourists visiting the Manaoag Minor Basilica.

The plan is in response to a recent Tourist Attraction Visitors Survey conducted on tourists and visitors who arrived in Manaoag. Among the question asked were inconveniences experienced, rating of town’s cleanliness, and access to Manaoag. Survey said tourists complained about expensive candles sold by ambulant vendors and high parking fees in private lots. (Rona Racca)

Bangus fish cage operators appeal for help

BANGUS growers in Pangasinan are worried about the continuing slack in the sale of milkfish as well as the continuous drop in its price: a kilo of bangus costs P120 to P130 per kilo from P150 per kilo the other week. Many bangus growers complain that they spend P150 in producing one kilo of bangus on account of the high cost of feeds and labor and worse the demand is low.

Government agencies from the growers have asked for help, said the main cause in the drop of bangus price is oversupply of the product because the fish cage operators simultaneously harvested their fish in captivity while other harvested their stocks prematurely due to the changing weather that leads to a fish kill. (Rona Racca)

 Dagupan rice farmers start planting

FARMERS in Barangays Mangin, Salisay, Tebeng and Malued in Dagupan City are preparing to plant their rice land with the onset of the rainy season because 80 percent of the rice lands in Dagupan City are rain-fed.

Farmers thanked the Department of Agriculture for providing rice seeds early enough and were distributed by Mayor Belen Fernandez at the city plaza during the 77th Anew nga Dagupan on June 20.  (Mathew Pacheco)

High food sufficiency level noted in Region 1 

FOOD supplies in Region 1, except for a few, are more than 100 percent sufficient to the needs of all people for the whole year, data from the Department of Agriculture Field Office 1 showed.

According to DA FO1 Executiv4 Director Annie Bares, rice has 254 sufficiency level; corn, 1,204 sufficiency level; mango, 123 percent sufficiency level, tomato, 391 percent sufficiency level; onion, 158 percent sufficiency level; mungbean, 363 sufficiency level; peanut, 68 percent sufficiency level; garlic, 506 percent sufficiency level; carabao meat, 132 percent sufficiency level, beef, 407 percent sufficiency level; goat meat, 13 percent sufficiency level and chicken, 55 percent sufficiency level. Price of meat, vegetables in Pangasinan stable 

THERE were no changes in the  price of meat and vegetables in various markets of Pangasinan during the past few days and expected to remain stable.

The price of pork remained at from P340 to P350 per kilo; chicken meat, P180 per kilo; and beef, P400 per kilo. Highland vegetables can be bought at from P140 to P180 per kilo while lowland vegetables are selling at from P200 to P280 per kilo . These prices are expected to increase in July on account of the rainy season. (Mathew Pacheco)

Price of rice in Pangasinan remains high

RICE consumers in Dagupan and Pangasinan continued to complain over the spiraling price of rice. The recent increase was P2 per kilo. Rice retailers said traders imposed higher price of rice per bag.

However, vendors are hoping that the price of rice will drop starting August as a result of the lowering of tariff of imported rice through Executive Order No. 62 of President Marcos, to take effect in July 6. The Philippine Statistic Authority expects price of imported rice to drop by P6 per kilo. (Joana de Vera)

DA distributes hybrid seeds to farmers

THE Department of Agriculture Field Office 1 distributed hybrid palay seeds to farmers tilling 300,971 hectares of land in the region to ensure that the targeted palay production in Pangasinan, La Union, Ilocos Sue and Ilocos Norte will be achieved.

At the same time, DA said it will also distribute fertilizer discount vouchers to farmers tilling 241,000 hectares. Each discount voucher is equivalent to P3,400, which the farmer can save when purchasing fertilizers from accredited dealers. (Joana Racca)
