UPang’s 81st founding anniversary events

The University of Pangasinan (UPANG) observed 81st founding anniversary visiting, serving and transforming communities.

IT’s    not easy to reach 8l years of age and yet remain strong, vigorous, enthusiastic  and unflagging in an ardent mission to educate the youth, sire  successful professionals, national and community leaders, national board placers,  and touch  thousands of lives  making them better citizens of the  world.

The University of Pangasinan, now  under the inspired leadership of  businessman-educator, Chairman Cesar T. Duque and President Catalino P. Rivera, has never grown old, so to speak, because it has found the elixir of  life, an  unceasing quest for excellence, which has been its wellknown  tradition and commitment,  and its present work of  transforming individuals and communities.

On its founding day, Februaury 6, all eyes were riveted to UPANG CARAVAN 2006 which the university launched first month of the year, where  teams of students  and faculty members visited  l0 towns and one city in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th districts of  the province.

The caravan  started  with a colorful  motorcade on the main throughfares “to expose the university to  the people and communities.”

What happened was a wholesome revolution of love because no university or college in these parts  has ever done it in the past.

In coordination with local officials led by  the mayors, the caravan  rendered primary health care, sports clinic, art exhibit, lecture series, livelihood workshops, job fair, cleanliness drive, feeding program and many others that showed a caring university.

Each day-long activity was highlighted  by a cultural presentation involving the university’s pool of talents and cultural groups  showcasing their expertise in dancing, singing, acting, poetry reading and other skills.

The mayors  and local officials who joined the caravan were enthused by  the university for  going out of its way to  hobnob and dialogue with the hoi poloi.

For days, UPANG became a mobile university, earning monicker  “UPANG on wheels,” and because of public clamor, the caravan will soon  include  the other districts because  the good news has spread like the proverbial wild fire.

“It’s about time the university register its presence in the community; it has to impact on the lives of people, since community building is our mandate,” Dr. Rivera, university president, said.

What stood out in the university’s direct interaction with the people was their need  to conquer poverty, clamor for jobs and employment, to which the university has quickly responded  as it embarks in opening opportunity courses  or special programs that directly and meaningfully  alleviate the conditions of  the poor.

Themed “Revisiting UPANG at 8l: Towards Building a Community Within,”  the anniversary celebration has lined up the following activities: February 6, mass, motorcade, opening ceremonies, sport activities; Feb. 7, exhibits, academic, literary and musicale contests; Feb. 8, community outreach/open house; Feb. 9, faculty and employes night, and  Feb. l0, student night (search for Mr. And Ms. Upang).

The  caravan, the  campus activities and the  weeklong celebration were a roaring success, a tribute to the university’s  community-centeredness  and the people’s  support for which the University of Pangasinan is eternally  grateful.
