Gov’t holds declaration of state of calamity
THANKS TO THE RAINS
LINGAYEN–The Sangguniang Panlalawigan has deferred a proposal to declare a state of calamity in Pangasinan following the heavy downpour last week brought about by two succeeding tropical storms.
The proposal, authored by 4th District Board Member Jeremy Agerico Rosario, stems from an endorsement made by Governor Amado Espino Jr. of the report of the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPAG) in coordination with provincial civil deputized coordinator.
The resolution was shelved during the provincial board’s special session Thursday afternoon as rains had clearly preempted its presentation.
The OPAG’s August 9 report indicated that as a result of the heavy rainfall experienced in the province from August 5 to 9, the planted area has increased from 111,055.05 hectares on August 6 to a total of 128,681.98 hectares as of August 9 around 11:00 a.m.
This showed an added planted area of 17,626.93 hectares or 15% increase.
The report added that that unplanted area both in the rainfed and irrigated is 49, 934.93 hectares or about 27.96 percent of the total target area to be planted this wet cropping season.
Agriculture officials in the province are hoping that by August 15 the province would attain 100 percent coverage in irrigated areas and 70 percent in rainfed areas.
Rosario said the OPAG is optimistic that the rains will continue based on the report of the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services.
Meanwhile, in Manaoag town, Vice Mayor Kim Amador said the proposed resolution to declare the town under state of calamity due to the extended dry spell has also been withdrawn.
