DAGUPAN City Mayor Belen Fernandez called for solidarity among the consignacion at the Magsaysay fish market to safeguard the city’s bangus (milkfish) industry.

In an interview over Aksyon Radyo on June 6, Mayor Fernandez cited the current oversupply of bangus in Dagupan, attributing it to the influx of ‘alien bangus’p from other towns.

Mayor Fernandez urged the consignacion sector to collaborate and refrain from selling ‘tangok’ bangus, that will negatively impact on the Dagupan’s bangus brand.

She said vigilant inspectors at the market have been successful in preventing the entry of bangus from areas affected by fish kills in Western Pangasinan.

This, after reports of fishkills in Western Pangasinan, that resulted in bangus prices dropping to as low as P10 to P20 per kilogram.

During the interview, Fernandez said she has issued a directive to the City Legal Officer to take legal action against anyone caught selling ‘tangok’ bangus.

Meanwhile, efforts are underway to further regulate the entry of bangus from Bulacan and other areas, and to consider the eventual dismantling of illegal fish pens in the city that proliferated during the past administration. (Ahikam Pasion)
