Oversupply of mangoes hit growers’ profits
FIRST the good news. Households and visitors in Pangasinan are having a heyday buying mangoes where these are available at low prices because of oversupply.
Now the bad news. The mango growers are hurting because the oversupply resulted in very low returns for their produce.
Mario Garcia, president of Pangasinan Mango Growers Association, told in an iFM Dagupan interview that simultaneous harvest of mangoes in Regions 1, 2 and 3 resulted in as low as P20 per kilo farm gate price.
Mango growers who did not spend for and use spray chemicals to induce flowering of their mango trees are spared from this development, he added.
About 80 to 90 percent of the harvest now are free from cicid fly infestation, he said.
He said government intervention is needed for growers to help market their produce at higher prices to enable them to recover their expenses. “The KADIWA project of the current administration where farmers can sell their produce is not enough,” he added.
He urges the provincial government to build more processing plants to maximize marketing of production of byproducts.
“Maraming nabubulok, maraming tinatapon na mangga ngayon. Sa laki ng volume, hindi ma-absorb ng mga exports saka mga processing plants saka mga local markets sabay sabay talaga ang harvest hanggang katapusan ng buwan na ito,” Garcia said. (Eva Visperas)
