Region’s agri suffers P152-M loss due to El Niño

THE Department of Agriculture (DA) Region I said total damages in the region due to El Niño reached P152 million from affected 3,141.9 hectares of farmlands in the region and displaced 5,968 farmers.

DA Region I information officer Vida Cacal said most damaged were corn farms with P78.8 million, followed by rice at P53.9 million, and other high-value crops at P19.1 million.

Ilocos Norte suffered the most losses in the region with damages reaching P80.5 million, followed by Pangasinan at P61.8 million.

Pangasinan recorded corn damages amounting to P34.3 million, and P27.5 million in rice.

Ilocos Sur has recorded P5.5 million in damages, while La Union has logged P4 Million.

Despite the damage, Cacal said the losses only amounted to one percent of the total 519,000 hectares of farmlands in Region I. (Ahikam Pasion)
