UL Tigers bow out in NCRAA tourney

THE University of Luzon Golden Tigers suffered a blowout loss against the number one-seed Olivares College Sea Lions, 69-90, ending its campaign in the quarterfinal round of the 30thNCRAA basketball tourney last May 3, 2024 at the Olivarez College Gymnasium.

In the opening quarter, the Sea Lions quickly displayed their strength in defense and collective scoring to mount an early lead, 29-19.

Heading to the second frame, Michael Lambino had to work in the paint area to ignite the offense for the Golden Tigers with seven points and seven rebounds alongside the 6-point contribution of Ventax Begenio.

During the second half, the triumvirate of John Umali, MJ Gallano and Hanz Maycong led the balance-scoring surge for the Sea Lions to pummel down the Tigers to advance to the next round.

Umali delivered 18 points and 10 rebounds to register a double-double performance, Gallano chipped in 16 points while Maycong registered 15 points .

Tigers’ Lambino had his own double-double with 17 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks combined with Begenio’s 16-point production and six rebounds.

UL head coach Byron Vidal said that the team fought hard going off against the league’s number one team.  “We entered this tournament with an expectation to perform on a high-level and to garner exposure, and the boys accomplished that with this quarterfinal run despite having a shaky start in the season”, Vidal said. (Kim Gealogo)
