Pangasinan Chess Team shines in National Games 2023
THE Pangasinan Chess Team proved its superiority in the game of minds and wits by amassing six gold and four silver medals in the recently concluded 2023 National Games held at GSIS Gym in Pasay City last December 22, 2023.
Members of the provincial chess club who stood tall at the podium were: Gerrick Austria, Edgar Tullao, Jugo Fabian, and Winnifred Boquiren.
Austria, 55, from Malasiqui, earned three gold in standard, rapid and blitz categories while his teammate Edgar Tullao, 57, from Tayug, duplicated the feat in the 50-64 Team category.
In the tussle for 65 years old and above plum, both Boquiren, 65, also from Malasiqui and Fabian, 61, from Mangaldan garnered two silvers in standard division and rapid games.
Head coach Eduardo Suarez honed the team’s success through series of mental gameplay and decision-making skills said, “Within the two-month preparation, we just built the team camaraderie through daily match-ups and sharpened their techniques they can use in their battles”. (Kim Gealogo)
