Unwavering love for JDV
By Eva C. Visperas
FOR countless years, December 26 has marked a special occasion – the birthday celebration of the esteemed five-time Speaker, Jose de Venecia, Jr. or JDV for short.
Each year brought anticipation and excitement, marking a highly awaited period for relaxation, even if just for a day. The past years, the Pangasinan media group, traveling collectively in a van, embarked on an annual journey to Metro Manila. Our routine involved initial bargain hunting, followed by a shared lunch, and then made our way to the party venue, typically hosted at the Sampaguita Pictures compound. This renowned Filipino film production company, a box office hit during the childhood years of our parents or grandparents, was established in 1937. It was owned by the Vera-Perez family, specifically Manay Gina de Venecia’s departed parents.
Although the once-thriving film production company is no longer active, its compound in Granada St, Valencia, New Manila, Quezon City, continues to host the grand celebration for JDV’s birthday.
Wearing lively color red as a theme that represents love, courage, good luck, joy, and prosperity, guests gather to pay tribute to JDV. The occasion draws notable individuals from the realms of politics, entertainment, business, and diplomacy, showcasing the extensive impact and profound regard commanded by JDV. (This is the reason why, throughout the years, I have accumulated numerous red blouses and dresses).
At JDV’s gatherings, prominent figures would party for an evening of celebration.
Over the years, I was lucky to have witnessed the extent of influence JDV had and the respect and love people showed him was evident, they who made it a point to personally extend their well-wishes.
There were also times when he celebrated his birthday in his Binloc residence. The De Venecias are gracious hosts and with Manay Gina around, every celebration was perfect!
This year, media friends wondered if we would again travel to the metropolis for JDV’s special day but it was not to be. JDV’S family decided that this year’s will be a close family members’ bonding this Christmastime.
Surprisingly, while casually scrolling through Facebook for news updates, I came across a post from Dagupan City Mayor Belen Fernandez. The post captured the highlight of the evening – JDV, accompanied by his beloved wife Manay Gina and their charismatic son, Cong. Toff, receiving exceptionally warm greetings from the people of Dagupan during their Barangay and SK Night. The joyous scene unfolded as they entered the city plaza to partake in the festive atmosphere with the locals.
A radiant smile lit up the people’s faces, and a wave of happiness washed over them as they welcomed JDV and his family.
JDV was likely taken aback by the unexpected delightful sight, people eagerly snapping selfies with him, others warmly shaking his hands with joyful non-stop rendition of a birthday song. Then, there were three birthday cakes prepared, with JDV smilingly blowing the candles. This nostalgic moment harked back to the years when JDV held the esteemed position of Speaker of the House, cherished and admired by many.
He came to celebrate his birthday with the people he served and loved, said Manay.
JDV radiated his sweet and infectious smile continuously, a brilliant beacon of warmth. In the depths of his heart, he sensed an overflow of love in that precious moment.
Mayor Belen remained consistently by JDV’s side, expressing love and gratitude, while Manay Gina and son, Cong Toff, continued to receive well-wishes from the public.
JDV did not celebrate with the political elite but with the people he served and loved. The radiant smiles and the palpable wave of happiness expressed the depth of gratitude and connection felt by all present.
In that precious moment, JDV’s infectious smile illuminated the night, and the overflow of love was palpable, making this birthday celebration truly unforgettable.#
