IN compliance with the directive of Mayor Belen Fernandez, Arellano Street was temporarily reopened by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) for two-way traffic since 6:00 a.m. on December 15 and will remain as such until January 6 next year.

This was a day ahead of the December 16 temporarily reopening sought by Mayor Fernandez in response to the clamor of business owners, particularly from Nepo Mall for a chance to serve and sell to more customers more during the entire Yuletide season.

It will also benefit students of Universidad de Dagupan and University of Pangasinan.

In a talk to newsmen last week, Mayor Fernandez said the temporary reopening Arellano Street for the remaining days of the Yuletide season “is a commitment to business that I have to keep”.

Only light vehicles, including cars and jeepneys are allowed to pass Arellano Street. The heavy vehicles are still not allowed.

For now, vehicles going south are taking the left lane and those going north are taking the still uncemented right lane. No traffic snarls were noted so far till 10 a.m. as curing of some of the newly cemented portions of the road is over.

It was observed that workers of three different contractors undertaking the elevation of Arellano Street have shifted their work schedules in finishing the still incomplete elevated drainage on both sides of Arellano Street.

However, Arellano Street will revert back as one-way road on January 7, 2024 to enable all contractors of DPWH to finish their projects.

Fernandez expressed hope all existing projects on Arellano Street and all other streets will be completed by contractors by 2024’s first quarter or else the city government will impose damages on contractors for each day of delay. (Butch Uka)
