Arellano St. to be temporarily reopened on Dec. 16
AS TWO-WAY STREET TILL TO JAN. 6
IN response to requests of businessmen, Mayor Belen Fernandez announced that Arellano Street will be temporarily reopened to a two-way traffic from December 16 to January 6 next year.
In a talk to newsmen on Wednesday, Fernandez said that this is in keeping with her commitment to shop owners in Nepo Mall, stores along the Arellano St. and students and city residents and commuters.
Noting that a number of sections of the road on Arellano St. that were under construction have already been cemented, Fernandez called on contractors to backfill the gaps to allow light vehicles, like cars and jeepneys to use it. Buses and trucks will be banned in the area.
Fernandez took contractors of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to task during a meeting when she returned from a 14-day goodwill mission to Milpitas City in USA, noting that work in many areas slackened, and behind schedule.
She said she advised the contractors before she left for her overseas trip that she assured the business sector that Arellano Street will be made a two-way street but this did not prompt the contractors to step up their pace as she expected.
“Stop cementing the gaps because if you do, two more weeks will be needed for curing,” Fernandez told the contractors. She said just so she can keep up with her commitment, the gaps need to be just back filled so the already cemented road portions can be connected.
Fernandez said after January 6, Arellano Street will be back as a temporary one-way street to enable the DPWH contractors to finish their projects, warning that if they cannot, the city government will impose damages as penalty.
Fernandez said DPWH must strictly monitor and supervise all contractors to ensure early completion of their projects. (Leonardo Micua)
