Bayambang’s new Romulo Bridge construction set to start in 2024
A YEAR after its collapse, the construction of a new bridge to replace the old Carlos P. Romulo Bridge in Barangay Wawa, Bayambang town that connects the town to Camiling in Tarlac, is slated to start early next year.
This was announced by Third District Rep. Rachel Arenas on her Facebook page, confirming the decision of the committee meeting of the North Luzon Growth Quadrangle (NLGQ), where priority projects for Regions 1, 2, and the Cordillera Administrative Region are made.
At the same time, Arenas said the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) approved her request for the funds for the construction of the new bridge.
The congresswoman said she views the construction of a new bridge will be a lasting solution to ensure the security and safety of Pangasinenses and commuters using the bridge that spans the Agno River.
She thanked DPWH family, led by Secretary Manuel Bonoan and Regional Director Ronnel Tan for making her project possible.
In October 2022, the Romulo Bridge collapsed due to overloading when a 12-wheeler dump truck and an elf truck, with a combined weight of 70 tons, traversed it simultaneously. The old bridge was constructed in 1945.
As a temporary measure, a bailey bridge was erected to allow only light vehicles to pass through the area. (Eva Visperas)
