Farmers association receive cash grant for organic farm
TWENTY-SEVEN indigent families in Urdaneta City, all members of the FARMaganda association, were beneficiaries of P500,000 start-up capital from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) to promote organic farming for food sufficiency,
The beneficiaries were all graduates of the Kabalikat sa Kabuhayan (KSK) project of the SM Foundation Inc.
FARMagandag president Maricel Badua said the funds they received will be used to rent a six-thousand square-meter lot, and the purchase of equipment for their organic farming.
The association, based in Barangay Nancayasan in Urdaneta City, partnered with SM for its Urban Gardens, to whom they sell their local produce every weekend.
Its program that focuses on expanding organic farming, was approved by the DSWD that made it eligible for the half million-peso grant.
Once the land has been prepared, and crops harvested, FARMaganda plans to expand their marketing to more government agencies, local and national.
Surplus produce will be processed by the DSWD and DTI and will be donated to feeding programs of local governments. (Ahikam Pasion)
