BSKE generally peaceful, orderly — COMELEC, PNP
ALSO IN TWO ‘ORANGE’ BARANGAYS
THE October 30 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections in Pangasinan were characterized as generally peaceful and orderly, with no major disruptions reported.
Both Provincial Elections Supervisor Marino Salas and PNP Provincial Director P/Colonel Jeff Fanged, extended their appreciation in a joint statement to the people of Pangasinan for contributing to the success of a peaceful, honest, and orderly election.
Salas said there were some complaints about voters not finding their names on the voter lists but these were isolated issues.
Fanged, on the other hand, said 270 personnel from the Armed Forces of the Philippines and 90 from the Regional Police Mobile Group provided support to the 3,000 policemen stationed in the 48 towns and cities in Pangasinan during the BSKE.
He added that Philippine Coast Guard personnel also played a role in ensuring a secure environment for the elections.
The positive assessment included the two barangays placed under the ‘Orange’ threat category: Bayaoas in Aguilar and Asin Este in the town of Malasiqui.
Bayaoas was placed on orange threat level following the murder of Arnel Flor Mata, a candidate for Barangay chairperson in that village, on October 22. Three suspects, including the alleged mastermind, the incumbent barangay chairperson of Bayaoas, were arrested.
Barangay Asin Este in Malasiqui was placed under the orange category because of the attempted slaying of its candidate for barangay captain, Salvador Tan Garcia, in Urdaneta City. Garcia sustained injuries but recovered.
Salas also said his office recommended the disqualification of 189 candidates in Pangasinan for various violations of election laws, including premature campaigning, displaying unauthorized campaign posters, and engaging in vote buying and selling.
If any of these candidates were to win and be proclaimed as winners, their proclamations could be revoked pending the outcome of the Comelec Legal Department’s review of the disqualification recommendations. (Leonardo Micua)
