REISHA Mae Velasco, a Grade 7 student at Abanon National High School in San Carlos City, won in the U13 Chess Category during the Pangasinan Provincial Selection Meet for Batang Pinoy 2023 held at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center on October 9.

Velasco was ranked No. 1 after sweeping the elimination rounds, outsmarting 21 chess players from across the province. Her coaches, Alfonso Rasco and Richard Soriano, praised Velasco’s techniques and strategic thinking, which led to her flawless record in the tryouts.

According to Rasco, Velasco’s mastery of the game and her ability to think critically under pressure were evident throughout the competition. Determined to make a mark in the U13 Chess competition, Velasco is poised to represent Pangasinan in the national finals of Batang Pinoy. (Kim Gealogo)
