THE Lyceum-Northwestern University (LNU) College of Law launched its 2023 Law Week Celebration last September 19, 2023 through a special online event with Atty. Loida Nicolas-Lewis who talked about her personal views on wealth management, her struggles against gender and racial discrimination in the United States, and her sources of inspiration that led her family to the top one percent in America.

Among the highlights of the interview:

The “Tête-à-tête with Atty. Loida Nicolas-Lewis on the Gender Card” conversation started with Dean Farah G. Decano, as moderator, asking her – What one word describes Atty. Loida? She unabashedly responded, “love.”

DECANO

On Decano’s question to world-renowned multi-millionaire and activist lawyer about how she maintains her humanity in a dog-eat-dog world, she replied “Profit with honor.”

“As long as you know the truth about yourself and who you are, do not be bothered by what other people say about you. Let it go,” she added.

Referring to Atty. Loida’s book, “Why Should Guys Have All the Fun?”, the “fun” she said used in her book was the enjoyment derived from high stakes wealth management.

When asked what “fun” can women with scarce resources enjoy, she said that fun can also be experienced in looking for opportunities to build wealth for one’s family, one step at a time.

Atty. Loida also spoke about the cases she filed and won against the INS, and shared her three-step secret to success: “Have a Goal, Obey a Code of Ethics, and Determination – and when put their first letters are put together, it spells G-O-D –. With GOD, nothing is impossible. Indeed, with God, all things are possible.”

Atty. Loida was especially pleased by Atty. Eloisa Manlansing’s welcome remarks when the latter recalled how her mother valued their family’s timeless NICFUR sofa, made by Nicfur Furniture, which was incorporated by Atty. Loida’s father, Francisco Nicolas, in 1945.

Atty. Loida, also known for her pro-democratic advocacies and her promotion of Philippine Sovereignty in the West Philippine Sea, was a member of the Order of the Purple Feather, an elite organization of students with high grade average at the UP College of Law.

In closing, she thanked LNU management, faculty and students of LNU College of Law for organizing the virtual interview. “To all the students of Law here, remember that learning has no age limit. Know yourself, and find your study time (the best time of day for you to absorb knowledge). Just remember: If you really want to become a lawyer, it will happen.”

The LNU Law Week Celebration will culminate in face-to-face events next week, including a special Law Night with former Chief Justice Ma. Lourdes Sereno. (LNU College of Law)
