BAYAMBANG Mayor Niña Jose-Quiambao issued a memorandum on Sept. 4 addressed to  public and private schools in the town underscoring the importance of good manners, respect and courtesy (GMRC) and etiquette in social media as well as enhancing partnership with parents.

Memorandum No. 14s 2023 was addressed to Drs. Longino Ferrer and Candra Penoliar, both Public School District Supervisors of Districts I and II respectively, Dr. Ian Evangelista, campus executive director of Pangasinan State University, Dr. Rafael Saygo, college president of Bayambang Polytechnic College, and to all schools heads and teachers of public and private schools in Bayambang.

“Today, I would like to draw your attention to the crucial topic of promoting good manners, respect and etiquette in social media platforms, particularly in relation to our partnership with parents, in an increasingly digital world,” the mayor wrote.

“It is essential for us as educational institutions to guide our students and maintain a positive online environment that extends to our interactions with parents, she added.”

Quiambao stressed five major concerns: 1. Educating Students in GMRC; 2. Promoting Responsible Social Media Usage; 3. Collaborating With Parents; Setting an Example; and, 5. Monitoring and Addressing Issues.

In a separate message posted in her Facebook account, Quiambao reiterated her call in her Memorandum No. 14s 2023 calling on teachers, parents, and the greater community of Bayambangueños “to pitch in once again educating our students on Good Manners and Right Conduct and particularly on the proper etiquette in using social media”.

She pointed out in particular that “the anonymity afforded by modern technology is beginning to produce a generation of children who think that foul, abusive language and uncouth and boorish behavior is normal”.

“But modern technology should be no excuse. This development is alarming and unacceptable,” she stressed.

She appealed, “Ibalik natin ang kagandahang asal dahil aanhin natin ang mataas na pinag-aralan kung tayo ay salat sa pagiging makatao?”

The mayor earlier reacted to foul comments made by some unidentified bashers, apparently students, criticizing her for not suspending classes despite heavy rainfall.

The mayor traced the netizens behind the bashing who later apologized to her. (Eva Visperas)
