DPWH confirms need for more dredging, road elevations in Dagupan
A JOINT field inspection conducted by officials of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and the Dagupan City Engineering office on September 6 led by Mayor Belen Fernandez, reconfirmed the urgency to dredge shallow rivers and creeks, elevation of roads and construction of bigger drainage system in order to mitigate the recurrent floods in Dagupan.
The city and DPWH engineers from the regional and Second Engineering District inspected rivers and creeks in the city to determine the proper intervention to further minimize flooding in the city as part of a comprehensive study by DPWH for the preparation of a flood mitigation master plan for the city that is only one meter above sea level.
Inspected were the Arellano Creek in Pantal; Patogkawen River in Pantal; Tambac Bridge (overlooking the Patogkawen River); Cross Box Culvert Old De Venecia Road, Lasip Chico; YMCA, Burgos-Perez Blvd.; Sinocalan River (Bacayao River) Rizal Extension Riverside, Pogo Chico; Mariposa Bridge, Mariposa Creek, Pogo Grande; Mayombo-Herrero Creek; Lasip Chico, Sitio Mosque; Pogo Grande Box Culvert; Ramos Bridge (along the Sinocalan River) and Old De Venecia Road.
After the inspection, Mayor Fernandez and the engineers discussed the flood mitigation projects that will be proposed and to be funded again by DPWH.
The DPWH is funding the elevation of the roads, construction of bigger and wider drainage system and the construction of a parallel bridge to the present Dawel Bridge.
In contrast, the majority in the Sangguniang Panlungsod asked the mayor to stop the DPWH from continuing the ongoing flood mitigation construction activities in the city. (Leonardo Micua)
