Dagupeño archer aces gold in world archery tourney
TWENTY-one-year old Dagupeño student Jason Feliciano teamed up with Isa Saquer of Bahrain and Reza Shabani of Iran to bag the gold medal during the World Asia Archery Challenge in Wonju, South Korea from August 21 to 25.
The three top Asian archers won over Sri Lankan’s Sajeev De Silva, Tajikistan’s Salimjon Salimov and Taiwanese Ming Hsiu Tsai in the Recurve Men’s Team final shoot off, scoring 5-3.
The lone Filipino archer in the team was mentored by coaches Clint Sayo and Joy Marino, who trained Feliciano in high shooting accuracy.
The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) selected Feliciano, one of the top archers in the country, to participate in the WAA Challenge.
Despite the language barrier hindering the team’s communication, they managed to overcome it and went to to a gold medal finish.
They prevailed against 36 top archers from 14 countries that saw action in the Recurve Men’s Team category.
“’Winning in the international level means a lot to us, not knowing we will make it in the medal match, even ranking sixth out of the 12 teams, is a proud testament that we can compete in the world stage,” Feliciano happily said.
Feliciano continues to hone his marksmanship in archery and he is set to compete in the Asian Games in Hangzhou, China on September 23. (Kim Gealogo)
