SOON, residents and visitors will see more policemen visibly stationed in tourism areas following the passage of a resolution on Monday by the Sangguniang Panlalawigan for the establishment of Tourist Police Unit in the province.

The SP in its regular session on August 14, approved a resolution authorizing Governor Ramon V. Guico III to enter into and sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Pangasinan Police Provincial Office (PPPO) represented by P/Col. Jeff Fanged, police director, for the implementation of the plan.

Vice Gov. Mark Lambino said the creation of Tourist Police Unit is in line with the vision of the provincial government to further promote tourism in Pangasinan.

The provincial level tourism unit will be composed of policemen wearing short pants and riding bicycles patrolling the areas, with training in first aid to provide assistance to visitors and also secure tourism destinations and assist in emergency cases.

According to Lambino, it’s a special purpose unit, he said, similar to the one in Alaminos City meant to monitor tourism and guard the Lucap Wharf area, the jump-off point to the Hundred Islands.

The resolution authored by SP members Marinor de Guzman and Jeanne Jinky Zaplan said the establishment and activation of Tourist Police Unit is an important collaboration between the provincial government and the PPPO.  (Eva Visperas)
